Poetry on the Green - June

6:30pm – 9:00pm

Promoter: The Bookshop on the Green
Venue: The Bookshop on the Green

Join us for our second Poetry on the Green event. In June we have an Open Mic and 2 talented featured poets performing, Zakariye Abdillahi and Memory Bhunu.

Zakariye Abdillahi is a poet and writer who has been performing poetry for over four years. He often writes to intrigue audiences through stories and characters, aiming to share new perspectives and ideas. In November 2022, he had his short poetry film ‘Cages’ shown on BBC 4 and released on BBC iPlayer. He has performed his poetry on Brum Radio, performed a set at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and headlined at The Glee Club.

You will often see him having trouble adjusting mics and hearing people comment on his height. Please do your best to ignore both. He thanks you.

Memory Bhunu made her poetic debut in 2019’s winning Unislam team. Since then, she has been exploring poetry and what it means to her. She is a Zimbabwean born poet and creative from the Black Country. Her work is deeply confessional with themes of love, gender, religion and culture.

How does our Open Mic work?

During the first half of the evening there will be an Open Mic. This gives you an opportunity for you to perform some of your own poetry. Anyone is free to sign up to the Open Mic. Sign ups will begin when doors open at 6.30pm and we have a limited number of slots so it will be first come, first served.

Will there be cake?!

Yes! The ticket price includes tea or coffee and homemade cake. There will be vegan cakes too!
